Environmental Issues Forum: Microbes in Ecosystems

Environmental Issues Forum: Microbes in Ecosystems

Thursday, July 20
Noon – 1 pm
Raising sheep in New Zealand is a massive industry in a country where sheep outnumber humans by about 10 to 1. Dr. Tom Bultman spent three months in 2015 on a project investigating the growth and effects of endophytic fungus inside perennial ryegrass, the main food source for sheep in New Zealand paddocks. Endophytic fungus can produce alkaloid chemicals in the grasses that can be toxic. Dr. Bultman will describe the fascinating, interacting, biological system with huge economic implications and show the show the results of his research.
